The only way to eat a Hot Cross Bun this Easter Weekend

Hot Cross Buns are a staple food of the Easter period. A spiced sweet bun usually made with fruit, marked with a cross on top to symbolize Good Friday; are most commonly enjoyed lightly toasted and lathered with butter… de-li-cious! (Especially with a cup of tea!) 

In recent years, we have made way for new flavours on our supermarket shelves such as, Sainsbury’s Cheddar and Onion Chutney, or a Salted Caramel & Blond Chocolate at M&S. Heston Blumenthal has introduced us to Mocha Coffee Hot Cross Buns at Waitrose, and if that’s not fancy enough, then you can give the Fortnum and Mason Goats Cheese Honey and Fig a try! – Its safe to say the flavour combinations seem to be endless! 

With the dual drawers of the new Instant Vortex Plus ClearCook Air Fryer, you can now cook two different things simultaneously – which got us to thinking… how can we jump on the “fancy flavour” hot cross bun band wagon and cook a filling in one drawer whilst our hot cross buns are toasting away in the other?! 

Say hello to our Hot Cross Bacon Baps!

 

The perfect mix of sweet, salt and savoury, these Hot Cross Bacon Baps are the only way to eat your hot cross buns this weekend – the ideal brunch for Good Friday, Easter Sunday, or any day of the long weekend!

They are perfectly portable, so you can dive into an Easter egg hunt with one hand, while munching away with the other. Buttery toasted buns, shatteringly crisp air fried bacon, and a slathering of spiced apple and pear chutney – what a treat! And the Instant Vortex Dual Drawer makes cooking these up a real breeze. No fussing with the toaster and frying pan at the same time as you can cook this all quickly in the dual air fryer baskets!

Ingredients  

  • 6 rashes of streaky bacon
  • 2 hot cross buns 
  • Butter, at room temp 
  • Spiced apple and pear chutney (or chutney of choice) 

Method 

  1. Place the bacon in an even layer in drawer 1 of your Vortex Dual drawer. 
  2. Split open the hot cross buns and place in drawer 2, cut side up.
  3. Press Drawer 1 and select Air Fry. Set the temperature to 200C and the time for 8 minutes. 
  4. Press Drawer 2 and select Air Fry. Set the temperature to 160C and the time to 6 minutes.
  5. Press SyncFinish to ensure the drawers finish simultaneously, and press Start.
  6. When the air fryer finishes, remove the buns and slather with lots of butter, then layer the chutney and top with the bacon. 
  7. Sandwich together and serve immediately.
