So, you have taken the plunge and got yourself a Vortex Air Fryer… high-five from us! We are certain this will be a great addition to your kitchen and the ultimate appliance to compliment a healthy lifestyle!
To make sure you get the most out of your new piece of “kit,” take a read of these 10 Air Frying tips and hacks…
- Don’t overcrowd the basket
Although there is plenty of room inside the Air Fryer basket, make sure it is no more than half full when Air Frying foods such as chips, cauliflower bites, chicken wings etc. Air Fryers work by hot air circulating inside, so space is a must!
- Rotate your food
All Vortex Air Fryers use Evencrisp™ air flow for a golden finish to your fried dishes. However, to aid this, you still need to flip your food, or remove the basket and give it a shake during cooking. Luckily, all Vortex Air Fryers have an automatic prompt to tell you to ‘Turn Food’ halfway through the Air Frying program.
- Use the right amount of oil
Air Fryers use little to no oil compared to traditional frying methods, however for some foods, a little oil is still needed. The oil helps to transfer heat around the Air Frying basket and is what makes your food crispier. We recommend oiling your food, rather than the basket – Think potatoes cut into chips and tossed in oil before placing them in the basket or rubbing oil onto meats before cooking… just 1-2tsps will be enough.
- Add abit of water
If Air Frying fattier foods, such as bacon or sausages, then this is one of the occasions when you don’t need any oil in the first place (hello even healthier!) but we do suggest adding a bit of water inside the Air Frying basket, underneath the tray. This is for 2 reasons. Firstly, to prevent any smoking that may occur inside the Frying basket during cooking, as when the fat cooks off and drips grease onto the base this can cause a little (harmless) smoke inside. The second reason to add a little water is to stop any dripped grease from sticking to the bottom of the basket, for even easier cleaning!
- Use the Bake function to save stale foods
Another occasion when adding abit of water can be helpful too is if you have any opened pastries, biscuits, breads that have gone hard and stale. Place a few tablespoons of water into the Air Fryer basket, then place your stale foods on the tray on top. A few minutes using the Bake function, and they will be good as new in minutes!
- Always clean between cooking
Lucky for you, Vortex Air Fryers are non-stick, so cleaning is generally just a wipe with a warm soapy cloth, which we suggest you do after every use. If any grease was stuck inside the Frying basket, this could become harder to clean the longer it is left, which ultimately could damage the non-stick coating.
- Pat dry food
Meats and veggies that don’t have a crispy coating are sometimes a little more difficult to crisp, so by patting the food dry with paper towels and absorbing any excess moisture is a quick and easy way to get them crispy!
- Adapt oven recipes accordingly
Pretty much anything you would normally cook in an oven can be made inside a Vortex Air Fryer, it will just cook it a lot quicker! So, if you are following an oven recipe, make sure you adapt accordingly for your Air Fryer. We suggest reducing the temperature by about 10-12°C and reducing the time it would normally take in an oven by about 30%. E.g., if frozen chips take 25mins at 210°C in an oven, then they will take about 17mins at 198°C in an Air Fryer. If it needs a little longer when the program has finished, you can always cook for a few more minutes, but you can’t bring it back from overcooking! (And if you are cooking meat, we always suggest using a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature before serving.)
- Utilise your kitchenware
Anything that is oven safe, is safe to use in your Air Fryer – think ramekins, silicone moulds, cake pans, glass or ceramic dishes, anything that fits! So, utilise the kitchenware you already have and use it inside your Air Fryer too.
- Don’t ignore the reheat function
The Vortex Air Fryer Reheat function is ideal for a speedy snack, and it doesn’t ruin the original taste or textures of leftovers (no more soggy pizza in the oven!) Just a few minutes on about 175°C is all it takes to reheat your leftovers to perfection.
